Garden Paths and Entry Walks
A walk from the driveway to the door gets used every day. A side path to the yard or a gate keeps feet off the lawn. Both start with a layout you can see on the ground.
Contractors set wood forms along the line of the path. Curved walks use thin boards bent around stakes. Walk the layout before anything is filled so you can move a curve or widen a spot.
Your Walkway Versus the City Sidewalk
A walkway on your lot is your project. The sidewalk along the street usually sits in the public right of way, and that is city ground. The Carlsbad guide we read does not cover sidewalk or right of way work.
If your job touches the public sidewalk, curb or apron, check with the city first. Start with the city homeowner guide and the Customer Self Service portal.
Slopes, Steps and Edges
Many Carlsbad lots slope. A walk on a slope may need steps or a gentle ramp. Ask how the contractor sets the rise of each step so they stay even and safe.
Ask how the edge meets planters and gravel. A clean edge keeps soil from washing over the path in the rainy months.
Before Work Starts
Stakes for forms go into the ground, and so do footings for steps. The digger must call 811 is the free call that sends utility crews to mark buried lines before you dig. at least two working days ahead. Ask for the ticket number before the crew starts.
